Once a farmhouse that served as a stagecoach stopover for meals, the Bark Eater Lodge is almost two centuries old. “Bark Eater” comes from a Native American term for the Iroquois’ longtime foes, the Algonquin. Visitors enjoy great views of the Sentinel Mountain Range and the Adirondacks’ 4,000-foot peaks, especially from the polo field that doubles in the winter as an instructional area for skiers. The Sentinel Mountain Range stands guard over a small glacial valley that forms one of the passes through the mountains between the Ausable Valley and the plains of North Elba. The cross-country ski trail system is groomed and tracked, with sections for skate skiing. Ungroomed trails for both skiing and snowshoeing loop off the main trail at many points. Snowshoers are requested not to walk in the set tracks. The Ridge Trail Loop, a combination of trails, is a favorite of cross-country skiers who frequent the Bark Eater trails because of its easy access to some of the most spectacular views in the Adirondacks. The Ridge Trail Loop provides a quick visual geography lesson of the High Peaks region.Surface quality: Groomed and packed for classic and skating techniques. Fees: yes.
