Forming the eastern wall of massive Avalanche Gulch, Green Butte Ridge rises 5,000 feet from Bunny Flat to where it joins Sargents Ridge at the foot of towering Thumb Rock. Although the upper half of the ridge is far too rugged for a trail, the lower portion is easily climbed via the unofficial Green Butte Ridge Trail. This steep path is a short, direct way to climb above the tree line and get staggering views into Avalanche Gulch. Even after the path fades away amid a sea of loose talus, it is straightforward to scramble over the rock to the top of 9,193-foot Green Butte, where more stunning views await.
