Hedge Creek Falls, a pretty little waterfall in a small city park north of Dunsmuir, is just off of I-5. The falls are the main attraction, but the trail is full of unusual geology, interesting routing, and a great view of Mount Shasta. This short hike has a lot to offer. As I-5 leaves Dunsmuir and begins its climb up toward Mount Shasta, signs proclaim the presence of nearby Hedge Creek Falls. Travelers may be curious about the waterfall, but usually don’t stop. They keep driving toward the giant volcano farther up the highway. This leaves Hedge Creek Falls to locals, for the most part. Despite the lack of attention, this is a great little hike with surprising diversity. Of course, the primary attraction is the waterfall, a 30- to 35-foot plunge that pours out of a large notch cut through a hanging wall of columnar basalt. Its proportions are not grand but it is perfectly packaged and very pretty, with the added attraction of a trail routed behind the waterfall.
