Trap Pond is the last remaining vestige of the freshwater wetlands that once covered this portion of Delaware and Maryland. As you hike its trails and paddle its waterways, you’ll be exploring a rich ecosystem that is unique in the Mid-Atlantic. Keep your eyes peeled, as the park is rich in all manner of wildlife; bird watchers especially enjoy this environment as herons, owls, hummingbirds, and even the occasional bald eagle call this pond home. You’ll find the second-growth bald cypress trees and the swamps they inhabit a fascinating change of pace from the mountains, rivers, and forests we backpackers usually enjoy.
