The lone ?r tree that graced this peak in the Highlands for two centuries has been gone for a couple of decades now, but the sweeping views and brilliant wildflower displays are as good as ever. This is a short hike with a big payoff. Under a thick forest canopy, begin on a wide and well-built trail. The way steepens after an easy start, slowing your pace. The surrounding forest is grand with a lot of big Douglas firs and arbutuses. In spring the forest floor is carpeted with enough shooting stars you’d swear you were witnessing a floral meteor shower. The views are wonderful, especially of nearby Mount Finlayson, Mount Work, and the Gowlland Range. Views are good outward too, to the Malahat, Olympic Mountains, and San Juan Islands.
