Mobile’s second-oldest cemetery, Magnolia, is a fascinating journey through 140 years of the Port City’s 300-plus-year history. The port city of Mobile is Alabama’s oldest city, established over 300 years ago in 1702 by the French. The city’s first cemetery was an old Spanish burial ground called the Campo Santo, which was open from 1780 to 1813. City officials thought the old cemetery was too close to the rapidly growing city and began looking for a new plot of land for this purpose.
