A little out-of-the-way gem that locals flock to in the summer, Little River State Forest is a lasting reminder of the amazing work that the young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) did during the Great Depression to help create the world’s greatest infrastructure and beautiful outdoor recreation areas. Hidden away just north of the town of Atmore on AL 21 is this little gem, Little River State Forest. Like many of the state parks and forests in the state, Little River was a creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. This double loop will take you to two highlights of their work here, Little River Lake and an original, and impressive, gazebo. The country was in the grips of the Great Depression. Millions of people, approximately 25 percent of the country, were broke, homeless, and desperate.
