Journey back in time to the first territorial capital of Alabama along the Old St. Stephens Loop. The trail winds through an active archaeological site where students and professors from state universities continue to uncover the past of this once-thriving river city. Along the route you will visit old town wells, walk the rediscovered streets, and visit the Globe Hotel dig where archaeologists are working to bring the past back to life. You will notice that many of the historical hiking trails of Alabama lead down paths through forests where something of significance happened, but there is nothing tangible that you can see to get a true feeling of what occurred there. That’s not the case at Old St. Stephens Historical Park, a vibrant and active archaeological site where scholars and universities come each year to uncover the history of the first territorial capital of Alabama.
