Walk the long since abandoned streets of the once-thriving antebellum town of Cahawba at Old Cahawba Archaeological Park. Stroll down the dusty dirt roads of the first Alabama state capital and visit remains of the Crocheron plantation, the New Cemetery and Negro Burial Grounds, the Civil War prison known as Castle Morgan, and the old one-room schoolhouse and Methodist Church. A major cotton distribution center, a Confederate prison camp for Union soldiers, and the first capital of Alabama—Old Cahawba has seen it all, and this ramble along the dusty dirt roads of the Old Cahawba Archaeological Park will give you a sense of what life was like here in the early 1800s. Six years after the Creek Indian War of 1813, Alabama became a state and, of course, they needed a state capital. As the newly formed state legislature met in Huntsville, the “permanent” location for the new capital at the confluence of two of the state’s largest rivers, the Alabama and the Cahaba, was being surveyed and constructed.
