An easy walking trek, the Horseshoe Bend Nature Trail loops around the site of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, a bloody and decisive battle that led to the end of the Creek Indian War but also shaped the course of history for the tribes of the region over the next few decades, culminating in their removal from the land over the “Trail of Tears.” Stepping out of your car at the Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, you will be immediately struck by the silence, the quiet serenity that surrounds you. Today only the occasional festival or reenactment disrupts the solitude, but just over one hundred years ago the scene was quite different when a bloody battle was waged here that helped seal the fate of Native Americans. The park is located on the flat section of a U-shaped bend in the Tallapoosa River near Alexander City.
