An amazing day of exploring awaits you at Moundville Archaeological Park. This 2.8-mile loop allows you to walk among some of the twenty-eight mounds built by Native Americans of the Mississippian period centuries ago, even climb to the top of two of them. Political center, religious center, economic center—Moundville, near present-day Tuscaloosa, was the hub of activity for the region during what is called the Mississippian period of human existence. The lifestyle and culture of these people is a fascinating study and best experienced at Moundville Archaeological Park, where this loop trail is found. As I said, the area was called Moundville because of the Native Americans who lived here around AD 1120. It is called the Mississippian period because these tribes were first established along the Mississippi River.
