Ruffner Mountain near Birmingham once played an important role in making that city an important iron town, and that history is showcased on the park’s Mine Ruins/ Crusher Trail. In fact, the trails here still have the red tint of the ore. You will visit several of the old mines, long since sealed, at Red Mountain and view an actual ore crusher buried deep in the woods at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, which was used to pulverize huge chunks of rock, preparing it for shipping.
