Part legend, part ancient history. That’s what’s in store for you as you walk to—and under—Noccalula Falls. The falls were named for Cherokee Indian princess Noccalula and the legend of her tragic love story that ends at the bottom of this 90-footdeep gorge. The trail into the gorge takes hikers past towering rock bluffs, small caves, and a mammoth rock shelter that allows you to walk beneath the falls. Over the centuries Black Creek began eroding away the land and eventually created a beautiful 90-foot waterfall and the gorge we will be walking. As time went by, the water’s action at the bottom of the falls, a plunge pool, and the water’s action at the top of the falls began to erode the rock wall underneath until finally the overhang that had formed collapsed. Today it is an impressive rock shelter that the trail actual travels through directly behind the falls.
