History greets you at every turn along this trail through the Dismals Canyon. The high, green moss covered canyon walls and rock shelters were home to Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Paleo Indians as far back as 10,000 years ago. Remnants of an old water mill and its old mill stone can be seen as well as the hiding place of robbers. Oh, and did I mention the scenery is absolutely breathtaking? Up in northwest Alabama you can explore some interesting canyons with a rich geologic and human history dating back thousands of years ago, such as those found in the Sipsey Wilderness or Cane Creek Preserve. Today I’ll be taking you to another canyon in that corner of the state that also has a rich history and offers an excellent, easy walk for the entire family, Dismals Canyon.
