This hike around a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) small wild area leads to a cave on the side of the aptly named Cave Mountain. The cave was actually a saltpeter mine that was used for ammunition during the Civil War. The hike takes you to some nice views of Lake Guntersville and a beautiful turtle-filled wetland. This Tennessee Valley Authority small wild area is only 34 acres in size, but within its boundaries high above Lake Guntersville you will find a spectacular little 1.4-mile lollipop loop, the Cave Mountain Loop, that features rock bluffs, tupelo swamps, and, no surprise here, a cave.
