A granite slab perched on a canyon rim above Bear Creek opens up the majesty of the high Bitterroot Range. A wide swath of forest in the U-shaped valley below gives way to granite basins. Along the spine of the range, Sky Pilot Peak and Gash Point command the view. To the east you can make out the Sapphire Mountains on the far side of the Bitterroot Valley. The hike gains just over 1,000 feet as it switchbacks through forest toward a giant castle rock that towers directly above the natural viewing platform. Watch for mountain goats.
