You just may see a playful river otter sliding down a mud bank along this trail. This acrobatic aquatic mammal was once thought to be extinct in Colorado and most of the western United States. In an attempt to restore its populations, the Colorado Division of Wildlife (now called Parks and Wildlife) released more than a hundred river otters into the Piedra, Gunnison, Upper Colorado and Dolores Rivers and at Cheesman Reservoir between 1978 and 1983.
