Some say Oh-Be-Joyful Creek near Crested Butte, Colorado, was named in the 19th century after valuable ore was discovered in the gulch. Other long-time locals, however, insist those stouthearted miners in the late 1800s were “joyful” as they raced down the mountain to visit the brothels in Crested Butte. Today, we’re joyful to meander through this wildflower wonderland. A relatively easy hike leads into Oh-Be-Joyful Basin, surrounded by 12,000 to 13,000-foot peaks. It’s great for the entire family, but expect to see a few more people on this trail than on most other trails listed in this book.
