According to the Historic Guide to Routt County, gold prospector Robert McIntosh named Big Agnes Mountain in 1875—but it doesn’t say who Agnes was. Mica Basin lies between Big Agnes and Little Agnes mountains, in one of the prettiest cirques in this entire wilderness area, so I’m guessing Agnes must have been pretty special to old Robert McIntosh. Yet, while they’re beautiful, these are rugged and rocky peaks with a range called “Sawtooth” between them, so I don’t know. You’ll have to decide for yourself about Agnes, but Robert sure found a gorgeous place to prospect for gold.
