A rugged and challenging seven- to nine-day trip that travels through diverse terrain—a highlight is the rarely visited Hanagita Peak valley. The starting airstrip is on a plateau south of Steamboat Creek, known locally as Steamboat Hills. About 10 miles to the west is another possible starting point that would cut a day of travel off the route. Check with your pilot on the feasibility of the alternate airstrip. The first 10 miles of the route pass through an area so lush and dotted with sparkling emerald lakes that you will be tempted to linger. Finding places to camp will be easy, except that you may find it difficult to settle on one among the endless possibilities.
