The Stairway Icefall is the highlight of this trip. Though the icefall is visible all the way from McCarthy, this route gets up close and personal with this impressive glacial feature. When a glacier moves down a steep slope, the high rate of flow creates more stress than the ice can handle. The glacier breaks into huge, towering pieces called seracs. The resulting terrain is extremely chaotic and unstable, like a waterfall in very slow motion. The Stairway Icefall is the second highest in the world with a vertical gain of more than 5,000 feet.
