A beautiful area that is rarely visited. Just across the road from Wrangell-St. Elias, the region is on BLM land and so has no wilderness, park, or other designation to draw attention to itself, thus increasing your chances for solitude. There are two ways to gain access to the Liberty Falls high country. The easy way is to hike up the old mining road. The hard way is to make a bushwhack from the end of the Liberty Falls trail and then use the mining road for the exit route back down to the highway. But descending on the steep and rugged road is hard on the feet and doing an uphill bushwhack is not a lot of fun. The best approach is to hike up the mining road and bushwhack down to the Liberty Falls trail.
