A moderate hike with great views and volcanic features including examples of rhyolite and dacite domes, lava flows, vents, and erosion-resistant dikes. The trail begins at the signed trailhead at mile 36.8 of the Nabesna Road. The initial 0.9 mile section of the trail is a very pleasant walk under the shade of spruce trees and, later, alder. Notice all the volcanic rock underfoot—a hint of things to come. You can either return the way you came or continue on over the pass to make a loop. The route down the other side will be more diffi cult than the way up. There is no trail, so the travel is more rugged. The first section down from the pass is on hardpacked dirt and scree. Don’t just head straight down, but look for the sheep trail that angles down to the right.
