This is an easy walk from McCarthy to the terminus of the Kennicott Glacier. Begin in McCarthy. Take the gravel road heading east out of town. A few hundred yards from the center of McCarthy, in the middle of a Y intersection, you’ll see the McCarthy-Kennicott Historical Museum. Continue east in the direction of the McCarthy Community Center, which is on the right side of the road. Just across the road from the center, referred to locally as Tony Zach’s, is the McCarthy/Kennicott wagon trailhead. Once at the glacier you can continue walking along the edge or on the moraine. On clear days you can see Mount Blackburn and many other peaks to the north as well as the Stairway Icefall. Use caution when hiking on the moraine, however.
