One of the best mountain bike projects in New England can be found in the Rockland Preserve in Madison, Connecticut. This 649-acre property, bordered to the west by Durham and to the south by Guilford, was established around Coan Pond, the centerpiece of the preserve. The marshy pond has dark, rich soil and a diversity of wildlife, including families of beavers. In addition to wildlife, rare wildflowers and vegetation are abundant: lady’s slipper orchids, asters, several berry species, laurel, and massive oak trees all grow here. These routes follow miles of tracks through Rockland Preserve, which only recently gained legitimate mountain bike trails. Town leaders felt the property was under-utilized and entertained plans to develop it into a golf course. The plans fell through when they discovered just how difficult construction would prove. The town continued trying to find uses for nearly 450 acres of land, until 2011, when teacher Jason Englehardt proposed constructing singletrack mountain bike trails.
