This route follows in the footsteps of the early European colonists; Old Saybrook was the base camp for European settlers to explore Connecticut. The English settlers of Old Saybrook fanned out into the surrounding region and eventually sought permission to found their own parishes in order to worship at churches closer to their homesteads. Essex, Deep River, Chester, Lyme, Old Lyme, and Westbrook all originated as religious parishes for the colonial inhabitants of the original settlement at Old Saybrook. Today, these towns all host rich cultural attractions, from stage theaters to a preserved colonial inn where sea shanties are still sung the way they were in the 18th century. The ride takes advantage of the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry, one of the oldest continuously operated ferry services in the United States. The ferry is seasonal, from April 1 to November 30. If closed, an alternate crossing is available, adding roughly 10 miles to the trip. The causeway is narrow and can be rather hectic, either on the pedestrian sidewalk or the narrow roadway. Use caution and be respectful to other users. Things to see: Connecticut River, beautiful back roads, historic downtowns
