Old Saybrook is a classic shore town, full of islands, marshes, and quiet, low-volume roads. Bisected by I-95, Old Saybrook can feel like a bustling suburb; the highways exit onto a commercial strip of big box stores and parking lots. North and south of the small area between 95 and Route 1 are quiet, neighborhood-oriented areas. The south side contains a gorgeous beach community with a pedestrian-friendly town center and some spectacular views of Long Island Sound. Visitors are drawn to Old Saybrook for the scenic waterways. Bordered by the Connecticut River and the Long Island Sound, Old Saybrook is a prime place to view shorebirds, raptors, and even river otters. Architecturally, the waterfront includes 17th- and 18th-century homes and two lighthouses, Saybrook Breakwater and Lynde Point. The causeway is narrow and can be rather hectic, either on the pedestrian sidewalk or the narrow roadway. Use caution and be respectful to other users.
