East Haddam is an ideal town for a bike ride. Geographically large with a small population and little automobile traffic, this rural town has evolved over the years into a quiet community with a small regional tourism industry. First a fishing community, then a bustling mill town, East Haddam later went through a resort phase, attracting motorists from New York and the rest of Connecticut with scenic attractions. Major tourism dropped off as air travel became affordable, but East Haddam remains an excellent day trip destination. Highlights include a natural park enshrouded in supernatural legends, the castle home of a famous 19th-20th century stage actor, a former industrial site turned ghost town, and a famous regional opera house beside an 899-foot swing bridge reputed to be the longest of its type in the world.
