The city of Winsted, part of the town of Winchester, was one of the earliest mill towns in Connecticut and an important manufacturing center. This ride starts on Main Street, by the East End Park and town green. The route covers nearly 11 miles, starting with a ride through the scenic downtown, and then climbing up to nearby Highland Lake for a fairly level section along the length of the recreation area. Highland Lake is over 3 miles long, making it one of the largest lakes in the state. It is also one of the cleanest, thanks to a high elevation and plentiful underground sources of fast, fresh water.
