Once one of the richest cities in the nation, Hartford grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, doubling in population over the course of a decade. To ameliorate overcrowding and other urban woes, the Reverend Horace Bushnell proposed building a city park in an area occupied by tanneries, pigsties, and a garbage dump. This route starts on Jewell Street, on the north side of Bushnell Park. Nearby landmarks include the carousel, added in 1974, and a lovely pond with water fountains and sculptures.
