The paddling route for this trip follows along the Snipe Keys to circle into the Gulf around Snipe Point and, optionally, the Mud Keys before returning along the other side of the Snipe Keys to the start. The water is shallow. In theory you could probably walk much of it. Be sure to take polarized sunglasses to get a better view of the fish, sponges, and jellyfish beneath you, or a mask so you can hold onto another kayak for support as you dip your face into the warm water for an even better view. The mangrove islands on this route are roosting places for herons, egrets, and pelicans, and the outer islands have sandy beaches and offshore coral heads in water clear as glass. Watch for egrets and ibis flocking to their roosting grounds in the evening.
