A leisurely circuit of Geiger Key offers shelter and shallow water, so it makes a great beginner trip. You stand a good chance of seeing a lot of birds in the “lake” section to the north of Geiger Key, as well as fish to the south. There are lots of opportunities for rest stops. Geiger Key is named after the Geiger tree, Cordia sebestena. This tree was named by John James Audubon after Captain Geiger, a Key West wrecker he stayed with during his 1832 visit. The tree is found in the Bahamas, but also in the southernmost United States, in places such as Key West and Geiger Key. It is an ornamental flowering tree with scarlet-orange flowers.
