The Turner River is an easy trip leading from the Tamiami Trail (US 41) to the town of Everglades City. A freshwater Everglades stream leads to sheltered tidal water. This is a great trip for seeing birds. The descent, although there is scarcely a gradient, begins on freshwater and ends in a saltwater estuary. You will pass a significant cluster of Calusa Indian shell mounds. Launch at the northwest (upstream) side of Tamiami Trail at a small parking area, 0.5 mile west from SR 839, the Turner canal, and H. P. Williams Park. From the launch ramp a narrow channel parallels the road east to join the Turner River beside a bridge. Pass under the bridge. The vegetation is saw grass and reeds, typical of the freshwater Everglades.
