Fakahatchee Island is rich with cultural history, including remnants of a Calusa Indian mound about 20 feet tall, dating back more than 2,000 years. You will also see reminders of the European settlers who hunted, trapped, farmed, and made moonshine here. There are the ruins of two homes and a graveyard that date back more than a century. From the boat launch, head south along Faka Union Canal and River for 3 miles to Faka Union Bay. The canal offers straight, easy paddling. From red marker buoy 50, paddle into the large opening in the mangrove that lies at 150 degrees, about 0.5 mile away. This channel will narrow in about 0.25 mile and then open into Fakahatchee Bay.
