The Orange River meanders through a quiet rural development, bordered on one or both banks by houses along most of its length. With the waterfront as an attraction, most houses present a harmonious profile when viewed from the water, even if the level of development prohibits landing at any point. Some of the houses are old with mature gardens. In particular there seem to be a wide variety of bromeliads and tree ferns in the trees along the river, many obviously introduced into the gardens, but others natural or escaped and apparently faring well. This is not a dramatic trip, but if you’re prepared to look around and watch for manatees, then the journey upstream as far as the river permits and back downstream to the wildlife refuge on the Caloosahatchee at the point of its confluence with the Orange should offer a really pleasant day. Combine this with the magic of watching manatees in the warm water of the power station outflow, as they surface, float and roll just a few yards from the observation walkways, and you could have a perfect day.
