This trip, like Boggess Hole, explores a part of Charlotte Harbor starting from Placida. This is a sheltered trip in the shallow water of Gasparilla Sound and the Island Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Charlotte Harbor, the second largest estuary in Florida. Advanced paddlers should find this route interesting in almost any weather, and it is ideal for beginners in calm weather. Much of the area is covered by knee-deep (or less) water, so never gets very rough. But because it is difficult to paddle when the water is often too shallow to accommodate your entire blade, be cautious if the wind is from the west. A west wind will quickly carry you along your route from the launch, but it may be difficult to work your way back.
