Go on a safari, Colorado- style, at Soapstone Prairie. On any given day, you have a good chance to view pronghorns, coyotes, elk, and—since November 2015—bison. The soundtrack to your hike will undoubtedly be the distinctive, melodious song of the western meadowlark. Expect delays on your way to and at Soapstone Prairie. No, it won’t be due to crowds—this is a great place for solitude compared to Fort Collins’s close-by natural areas—it will be because you will likely stop to take a look at wildlife you might more closely associate with Yellowstone National Park than with the city of Fort Collins. A collaboration among the city, Colorado State University, Larimer County, and the US Department of Agriculture brought the bison back to Soapstone Prairie in 2015. CSU’s Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory helped to midwife genetically pure Yellowstone bison as a way to rid them of a disease called brucellosis. This paved the way for reintroduction, albeit in a fenced area of 1,000 acres.
