Created by an act of the Territorial Legislature in 1889, the University of New Mexico has since evolved into a showcase of regional Southwest architecture. At least 30 structures on campus are the design of John Gaw Meem. Some call it Pueblo Revival overkill. Frank Lloyd Wright’s critique of the campus publicly condemned Meem for using concrete and steel to imitate ancient indigenous designs. Meem shrugged it off, and the campus retains his spirit of simplicity and elegance. But there’s more than architecture to contemplate here. This short route visits numerous art galleries, performance spaces, science exhibits, designed landscapes, and more. To make the most of this walk, time it with events posted at unmevents.unm.edu.
