At the heart of this 860-acre state park, find the tumbling streamers and dark-rock escarpment of 60-foot Chapman Falls. The park name traces either to the growing of hops (an ingredient for beer) or to a charming myth that explains the potholes at the foot of the waterfall as the Devil’s hoofprints, burned into place as he danced about to evade the falling water. This hike combines the walk to Chapman Falls with the Vista Trail, paying tribute to the Eightmile Wild and Scenic River, one of only two federally recognized waters in the state. The other is the Farmington. Currently, in all of New England, there are only eight federal wild and scenic rivers. More than 25 miles of this river’s main stem and feeder waters are protected.
