This hiking loop allows you to tickle the armpits of south-central Connecticut’s Sleeping Giant, which stretches 2 miles long from crown to toe and heaves its chest 700 feet skyward. It is representative of the park’s award-winning trail system. The loop encircles the Giant’s form, traveling through mixed hardwood forest and picturesque groves of mountain laurel, the state flower. It also tops rocky outcrops for surveys of the neighborhood. Its violet and white trails are east–west trending. Red geometric trails run north–south, intersecting the loop. Start: Park picnic area. Schedule: Year-round, 8 a.m. to sunset. Distance: 6-mile loop. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours. Difficulty: Strenuous.
