At this charming Connecticut state park, you will find scenic picnic lawns with big shade trees, a cascading waterfall tumbling through a small gorge, a covered bridge, Papermill Pond, and the sparkling tannin-colored waters of Eight Mile Brook—not bad for 120 acres. An efficient short trail offers a see-it-all hike. Historically, the racing falls powered various mills, including an early match factory. With mostly gentle grades, this counterclockwise loop heads downstream along Eight Mile Brook, ascends the hill rising east of the brook, and returns along Papermill Pond. Historical remnants—old millstones, a steam-engine foundation, and a sluice pipe—hint at a bustling era before the park. From the parking at Papermill Pond, hike the wide gravel lane south along the pond’s west shore toward the falls and core of the park. Papermill Pond reflects its wooded shore, but a wake from a muskrat can distort the watery duplicate.
