In Upper Paugussett State Forest, this loop hike visits the wooded edge and slope along a confined stretch of the Housatonic River, Lake Lillinonah—a place of Indian lore and quiet beauty. An ill-fated love story has it that river rapids (now swallowed by the dam) snatched up a canoe paddled by Lillinonah, the beloved daughter of a Pootatuck Indian chief. Her European lover leapt to her rescue, but the fast water took both lives. This hike swings a 6-mile loop through 794-acre Upper Paugussett State Forest, traveling shoreline bluff and the wooded and bouldery rise above Lake Lillinonah. Follow the blue blazes from Hanover Road parking, crossing flowing water on the road culvert before turning east into woods and uphill. You reach “Al’s Trail,” a yellow-blazed and placard-marked segment of the Newtown Trailway, which shares the way. In a dip, find the loop junction. Keep left for clockwise travel. The trail has a defined earthen bed, sometimes rooted as it rolls along the foot of the slope above the Pond Brook inlet.
