This is certainly one of the best hikes in the Grand Valley. Is it one of the easiest? Well, it’s easy to get to, and if you’re in good shape and like to climb, it’s an easy hike. With a thousand feet of vertical gain within 1.5 miles, however, this one may stretch the limits of the term “easy.” A favorite of the locals, Liberty Cap Trail is fun and challenging as it scales the face of the Colorado National Monument on the eastern edge of the Colorado Plateau. It is 1.5 miles from the trailhead to Liberty Cap, a remnant sand dune more than 160 million years old that is slowly succumbing to the forces of erosion.
