Mica glitters brightly in the BLM’s Bangs Canyon area, located at an elevation of 6,155 feet and only 8.2 miles from the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in Grand Junction. The word “mica” comes from the Latin micare, meaning “to glitter,” in reference to the brilliant appearance of the mineral that was once mined here in the 1950s. Mica is a component of numerous products, including electrical insulation and windows.
