An easy day hike to two forested lakes. Lake Vernon is a great choice for a day hike with small children. The entire trail is well maintained and easy to follow. It passes through a rich, unburned forest, and there are no major climbs. Keep a sharp eye out for moose, especially in the big meadow just before Lillis Lake. The trail doesn’t have abundant drinking water, so bring an extra bottle. Like all trails in this area, mosquitoes can be bothersome, especially early in the summer. To reach Lake Vernon, take Trail 3 from the Clarks Fork Trailhead for about 1.2 miles to a well-signed junction with Trail 565 to Lake Vernon.
