This hike may very well be the top dog for canine hiking in the 94,000- acre Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Why? A scenic, uncrowded lake, a well-groomed trail that hugs a bubbling creek for almost its entirety, and miles of cool and damp old-growth forest—what more could you ask for? Get Rover into the rig and head to the trail. Saint Paul Trail 646 is a pure pleasure to hike for pups and old dogs alike. Even ol’ Barkley, an arthritic blue heeler, made it, enjoying every creek crossing, swimming hole, and spring along the way. The trail immediately enters the wilderness and one of the finest old-growth cedar forests in the entire Inland Northwest. In 1.5 miles you’ll come to an exceptional grove of giants, what I call “Saint Paul’s Cathedral Forest.”Here, too, is a lovely camping spot right on the East Fork of the Bull River.
