There are many miles of interconnected trails in the Caribou Mountains southeast of Idaho Falls, and a hiker could spend several weeks happily traveling all of them. Those efforts would be especially rewarding in the fall, when the maples, willows, cottonwoods, and quaking aspens turn the hillsides into a colorful palette of yellow, red, and orange. The scenery is more subdued than in the nearby Snake River Range to the east, but wildlife is more abundant here and, except for hunters, people are few. No one trail is better than another, but most hikers start at the Bear Creek trailhead near Palisades Dam and select from any of several possible loops to viewpoints atop Red Peak and Deadhorse Ridge.
