Granite Lake is but one of many “destinations” along this route. Just 2 miles up the trail, hikers can enjoy scenic Granite Falls. The trail winds through heavy timber of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness for the first 4.5 miles before breaking into open, brushy country and spectacular views of “A” Peak. This route is a longer but gentler approach than most hikes into the wilderness core, offering good camping and alternatives for further exploration. Beware, however, that Granite is low in elevation compared with other lakes in the Cabinets and the “brush zone” is thick for those with a yen for reaching the high country. Expect plenty of mosquitoes in late June and July.
