In 1977, Congress identified about 33,000 acres to be studied for possible wilderness designation in the vicinity of the 7,000-acre Ten Lakes Scenic Area. In 1987, an enhanced wilderness package totaling roughly 40,000 acres was proposed by the Kootenai National Forest management plan. Nothing official has ensued, but the area remains unspoiled and the route from Little Therriault Lake to Wolverine Lakes, 4.5 miles one way, remains a beautiful hike through a high alpine area that’s sinfully easy to reach. From Bluebird Basin to Wolverine Lakes, the route goes through forests and alpine meadows dappled with wildflowers. The peaks and ridges forming the high country around the alpine lakes are impressive, and this hike just skirts the edge of the protected area. Other opportunities range from day hikes and huckleberry picking to extended trips.
