Quick access to mountain lakes makes this loop trip ideal for beginning backpackers or day hikers looking for routes with several length options. Camp at Cabin Lake and catch small cutthroat trout or scramble to Cube Iron Mountain, elevation 7,110 feet, for views into Idaho’s Selkirk Mountains and Montana’s Cabinets and Bitterroots. The name “cube iron” refers to the remnant cube-shaped pseudomorphs of pyrite crystals (fool’s gold) found in rocks at some sites in the Cabinet Mountains. The pyrite here has been partially replaced by rusty red iron oxides, though you can sometimes find remnants of the original bright brassy pyrite in the cube cores. The cubes range in size. Choice ones are bigger than game dice.
